If you want to find information on the web you are almost certainly going to use a search engine. There are thousands of search engines throughout the world. Some are international, some region or country specific and some are subject specific.
Search engines are mainly of three types. Traditional search engines where you search for information using keywords in a search box. Directories where subjects are listed under certain categories (the most famous being Yahoo). Or meta searches that obtain their information from multiple search engines. Some use a combination of these systems. Search Engines listed on this page are categorised under these three headings.
There are a number of major search engines such as Alta vista, Yahoo, excite, infoseek and lycos who are well known throughout the world and in addition to having an international search engine also have a country specific one. If a UK engine is available this is shown as well as the international one in this directory.
