This is a directory of sites that update software on your computer to the latest available. This could offer you more functions or fix bugs in your existing software. And the best news is most of the recommendations are free. No service finds all the possible updates but some are better than others. I would use all the free services just to check your system periodically. Think your new system is up to date try these services and be surprised at the number of updates they will find.
The first port of call for updates to the windows operating system. If you have windows 98 you should use the windows update option on your start bar. If you have windows 95 click on windows update above. After a few minutes whilst windows updates scans your system you will be given a choice of update options categorised as follows:
Critical updates (you should always download these updates), Picks of the month, Recommended, additional features, fun and games and device drivers. You can choose what updates to install and windows update simplifies the installation procedure by installing the updates and maintaining a record. This allows you to see what you have updated and uninstall at a later date if you want to. Windows update will also inform you if critical updates need to be downloaded. Rating 10/10.
After updating your software using windows update your next visit should be to this site. After listing potential updates you can choose any or all of them. Apart from windows operating system updates it also offers updates on other commercial software products. Some of the updates are free but others are either beta or you have to pay for. In addition to software updates it will also tell you if you need to upgrade your hardware depending on what you use your computer for. Both of these services are free and well worth using. Options are my updates list, hardware advisor and my notify list. Site run by ZDnet. Rating 9/10.
Another good site that apart from finding updates to the main programs is also quite good at finding updates to lesser known shareware and freeware programs. The disavantage with this program is that you need to download and install catch up to your system. File size is 772kb. However apart from this, it is still a very useful facility, it's free and worth using. Site run by Cnet. Rating 8/10.
